But he also asked me for an obscure import he\u2019d heard about:<\/p>\n
Labrador \u201cInstamatic Lovelife\u201d<\/p>\n
…proving once again that I will never ever be able to reliably guess what sort of music this man likes.<\/p>\n
Basically, Labrador <\/a>sounds a lot like the pet shop boys<\/a> if they were from Denmark and hadn\u2019t mastered English. There\u2019s something abba-esque about the lyrics. And the pronunciation.<\/p>\n \u201c\u2026that you will try to listen…that you will try to see\u2026all the things I stand for\u2026’cause I know you\u2019re fond of me<\/p>\n Fond of me<\/p>\n Why does nobody listen? Why does nobody care? It\u2019s love and disaster\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n When we sat to listen to the CD, I poked Chris and said, \u201cYou\u2019re fond of me\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cOh\u2026\u201d he said. \u201cWhen I first heard that I thought he was saying, \u2018I know you from the Flea\u2019\u2026I thought the Flea might be some local nightclub.\u201d<\/p>\n John Donne and the metaphysical poets ran through my head. \u201cThe Flea!\u201d I giggled.<\/p>\n The next day I said \u201cDon\u2019t I know you from somewhere? From the Flea?\u201d<\/p>\n The Tower liquidation had some good stuff, too. Remember Toad the Wet Sprocket? \u201cAll I Want<\/a>\u201d? That video is one that I got to see on Asian MTV when I lived in Mirnyy.<\/p>\n Well, the lead singer for Toad the Wet Sprocket has a solo album: glen Phillips \u201calbulum\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s alright. Of course, it\u2019s a little moody and college (following the steps of TTWS). The song \u201cFred Meyers\u201d brought back fond memories of that Wal-mart-type store that I shopped at in Alaska–exactly the opposite of the intended effect of the song, which was meant to be a railing against big box stores.<\/p>\n But the big winner was Dar Williams\u2019s new one \u201cMy Better Self.\u201d Chris introduced me to Dar <\/a>a long time ago, and we even got to see her in concert at the Warfield in San Francisco.<\/p>\n The first song \u2018Teen for God\u2019 was so chillingly dead on that it\u2019s hard to listen to. That\u2019s Dar for you:<\/p>\n \u201cDear Lord I plan each day Bone on bone\u2026that\u2019s how she can hit you sometimes. Probably good PMS music, when you need something to cry about.<\/p>\n There is another album I didn\u2019t get yet. I found it on a commercial, one of those geico caveman commercials. The group is Royksopp and the song is \u201cRemind Me<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n I\u2019ll be ordering it soon, but check out the link.
