How about a nice day?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I think America started this greeting, \u201cHave a nice day!\u201d It replaced the older \u201cHow do you do?\u201d which\nbecame \u201chowdy\u201d before it feel out of use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A day is a tidy package. It\u2019s a handy size: small enough to grapple\nwith, big enough to fit some significant things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We can deal with a day. We can ask about a day, and give our\nwishe\u2026command?…for others to have a nice day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s not insincere. I wish for others to have a nice day, because\nI really want a nice day for myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I would like to put my day to good use, and really enjoy it.\nAnd by enjoy, I mean fill it with productive activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I think about it a lot. What will I do with my day? How will\nI pack it appropriately?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I try. Every day I have intentions, and I start out with ideas\nabout how and when I will do what.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I never quite make it. And I feel particularly guilty about\nit during this quarantine because there is no excuse. I have nowhere else to\nbe, nothing to do but what I set out for myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And I still do not hit my target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I just found this book: Daily Rituals: How Artists Work<\/em>\nby Mason Currey. He\u2019s collected the stories of artists\u2014musicians, writers,\npainters, etc.\u2014how they arranged their days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They are short little snapshots, with alcohol featuring\nprominently across many lives. There is not a consistent thread. It feels like\na reality TV show: \u201c At least I don\u2019t do THAT!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n These influencers, these famous names, were trying. They had\nweird, often inconsiderate and toxic habits and requirements they performed in\ntheir days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I am comforted to know they didn\u2019t hit it either. But the\nrange\u2014Mahler was austere, F. Scott Fitzgerald was a bacchanal\u2014the range gives\nme room to keep trying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019m trying.
